Microdose Packaging Guide: Capsules, Jars, Labels, and Tamper Seals

Microdose products depend on consistency. Customers buying capsules expect each one to match the last, each jar to arrive sealed, and the label to say exactly what's inside. Packaging carries a big share of that promise.

This guide is for brands and makers who package microdose capsules. It walks through each part of a complete microdose packaging setup: the capsules, the jar, moisture control, tamper evidence, and labeling.

A note on the law: the legal status of psilocybin mushrooms varies by country, state, and city, and they remain illegal under U.S. federal law. Creative Labz sells packaging only. Check the rules where you operate before you produce or sell any mushroom product.

Why Packaging Matters More for Microdose Products

  • Small units are easy to mix up. Capsules look alike. Clear labels and child-resistant closures keep them identified and out of the wrong hands.
  • Dried mushroom powder attracts moisture. Damp powder clumps, can grow mold, and can soften gelatin capsules.
  • Light, heat, and air wear down quality. Like most dried botanicals, mushroom material degrades faster when it's exposed. Our guide to increasing the shelf life of psilocybin mushrooms covers storage in depth.
  • Customers judge by the package. Buyers can't inspect what's inside a capsule, so a sealed, clearly labeled jar is how they decide whether to trust a maker.

Part 1: Capsules

Size 00 gel capsules are the most common choice for microdose products because they're easy to fill with a capsule tray and easy to swallow. Our microdose packaging collection carries clear and two-tone 00 capsules. Colored capsules can help customers tell product lines apart at a glance. For why 00 became the standard, see Why Size 00 Capsules Are Ideal for Magic Mushroom Packaging.

For filling, a 00 capsule filling tray fills up to 100 capsules per pass, and a 400-capsule tray is available for larger runs. Check fill weights across every batch with a 0.01g digital scale.

Part 2: The Jar

Most microdose brands sell capsules in child-resistant jars. Ours come in 3oz glass and 4oz plastic, clear or black, with ready-made designs, so a small brand can launch in retail-ready packaging without a custom print run.

  • Glass feels premium, doesn't hold odors, and is easy for customers to reuse.
  • Plastic is lighter, cheaper to ship, and won't shatter if it's dropped.
  • Black jars block light. Clear jars show off the product but should be kept out of direct sunlight.

We compare the two materials side by side in The Best Way to Package Magic Mushroom Microdose Gel Capsules: Glass or Plastic Jars.

For larger quantities or whole dried mushrooms, opaque Mylar bags are lighter and block light completely. Glass Jars vs. Mylar Bags explains when to use each.

Part 3: Moisture Control

Dried mushroom products need to stay dry. Many brands add a small silica gel packet to each jar to absorb moisture that gets in when the jar is opened. Fill capsules in a dry room, and close each jar as soon as it's filled.

Part 4: Tamper Evidence

A tamper-evident seal shows customers the jar hasn't been opened since you packed it. The two simplest options are inliners that seal under the lid and shrink bands that wrap the lid and neck. Both are stocked in our microdose packaging collection, and more options are in our tamper-evident stickers and shrink bands.

Part 5: Labeling

A good microdose label tells the customer what they need to know at a glance:

  • Product name and strain
  • Capsule count and fill weight per capsule
  • Batch or lot number and packing date
  • A warning to keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Any disclosures required where you sell

Our mushroom labels and accessories include strain labels, warning stickers, and wraparound microdose jar labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size capsule do microdose brands use?

Size 00 is the most common. It's widely available, works with standard filling trays, and is easy to swallow.

Should microdose capsules be stored in glass or plastic?

Both work well when the jar seals tightly and is kept cool, dark, and dry. Glass feels more premium. Plastic is lighter and more durable for shipping.

Do microdose jars need to be child-resistant?

Child-resistant packaging is strongly recommended for any product that could harm a child, and it's often required for regulated products. Check the rules where you sell.
