Moisture is the fastest way to ruin good cannabis. Too much of it and flower grows mold that has to be thrown out. Too little and it turns dry, harsh, and crumbly. The right packaging keeps moisture where it belongs, and it's one of the most important choices a brand makes about storage.

This guide explains how moisture damages cannabis, how to spot mold, and the packaging and storage habits that keep flower in the safe range from the day it's packed until the last bud is used.

How Moisture Damages Cannabis

  • Mold and mildew. Flower stored above roughly 65% relative humidity, especially somewhere warm, can grow mold. Moldy cannabis isn't safe to use.
  • Lost potency and flavor. Swings in moisture speed up the breakdown of cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • Poor texture. Damp buds are spongy and hard to burn. Overdried buds crumble and smoke harsh.

Most growers and retailers aim to keep stored flower around 55–62% relative humidity. Packaging's job is to hold it there.

What Causes Moisture Problems in Packaging

  • Packing flower before it's fully dried and cured. A sealed package traps whatever moisture goes in with the flower.
  • Temperature swings. Moving packages between hot and cold, such as a car, a fridge, or an unheated warehouse, causes condensation inside.
  • Humid storage spaces. Basements, bathrooms, and humid climates push moisture into packaging that doesn't seal well.
  • Packaging that doesn't seal. Thin plastic bags and loose lids let humid air in every day.

How to Spot Mold on Cannabis

Check stored flower regularly, especially in humid weather. Warning signs include:

  • White, gray, or fuzzy spots that look different from trichomes, which are shiny and crystal-like
  • A musty, damp, or hay-like smell instead of the strain's usual aroma
  • Buds that feel spongy or damp to the touch

If you see mold, throw the flower out. Don't try to dry it and use it.

Packaging That Keeps Moisture Out

Mylar Bags

Mylar is a metallized barrier film that blocks moisture, oxygen, and light far better than ordinary plastic bags. A resealable Mylar bag that's heat sealed above the zipper is effectively airtight until the customer opens it. See our guide on how to heat seal Mylar bags.

Airtight Jars

Glass jars with tight-sealing child-resistant lids keep humid air out and protect buds from crushing. Our 3.5g child-resistant jars are a popular choice for retail eighths. For storage tips, read How to Store Weed in a Glass Jar to Keep It Fresh.

Two-Way Humidity Packs

A sealed package keeps outside moisture out, but a two-way humidity pack manages the moisture inside. It releases moisture when flower is too dry and absorbs it when flower is too damp. Small 2-gram packs fit eighths and pre-rolls, and larger 67-gram packs suit pounds and bulk storage. Learn more in How Humidity Packs Can Help Increase the Shelf Life of Cannabis.

A note on silica gel: desiccants like silica gel only absorb moisture. They're great for dry goods like mushroom capsules, but they can overdry cannabis flower. For flower, use a two-way humidity pack instead.

Storage Habits That Prevent Mold

  1. Dry and cure fully before packing. Stems should snap, not bend, before flower goes into sealed packaging.
  2. Seal right away. Close and heat seal bags, or cap jars, as soon as they're filled.
  3. Store cool, dark, and steady. A closed cabinet or climate-controlled room beats a garage, car, or sunny shelf.
  4. Skip the fridge. Cold storage causes condensation when packages warm back up.
  5. Check stock regularly. Inspect a few units from each batch, especially during humid months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What humidity should cannabis be stored at?

Most growers and retailers aim for about 55–62% relative humidity. A two-way humidity pack holds that range automatically.

Can cannabis get moldy in a Mylar bag?

Yes, if it was packed too wet or stored somewhere warm with big temperature swings. Mylar keeps outside moisture out, but it also keeps inside moisture in, so dry and cure flower fully before sealing.

Is vacuum sealing good for preventing moisture?

Vacuum sealing removes air, but it can crush buds. Compare the options in Mylar Bags vs. Vacuum Seal Bags.
